"Footloose
And Fancy Free" (CD) Bill Bruford's Earthworks The music of Bill Bruford's Earthworks is
simultaneously accessible to the casual listener, artistically challenging to
the musician and wholly satisfying to the jazz purist. The
release of this double live CD, 'Footloose And Fancy Free' is timed to coincide
with a live DVD, 'Footloose in NYC' and both will serve to further evidence the
fact that Earthworks are one of the most exciting live bands around. Bruford,
of course, is one of the world's most celebrated rock and jazz drummers
and, over the years has showcased some great jazz players. Previous
collaborations have included Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Berlin and Django Bates. The
current Earthworks features the talents of outstanding upright bassist Mark
Hodgson, (featured in Global Bass in August2001). Alongside Bill and Mark on the
CD are pianist Steve Hamilton and sax player Patrick Clahar. While
the more recently recorded DVD features the talents of Tim Garland, following
Clahar's departure. Most of the Set is chosen from the two most recent albums,
'A Part And Yet Apart' and 'The Sound Of Surprise', both of which are also
available on the Discipline label. While
adventurously playing games with time signatures and melodic interpolation the
band display a seemingly effortless fluidity that brings
gasps of delight to the attentive crowd. Pieces
like 'Dewey-Eyed, Then Dancing' or 'Revel Without A Pause' are an enchantment. The set also takes a brief tour around Bruford's
project with Tony Levin, B.L.U.E, the album he cut with Ralph Towner and even
the very first Earthworks CD. Andy Long
